THE QUICK ANSWER

Can Congo potato puffers live with other fish?

The safest plan is one Tetraodon miurus in its own aquarium. Small animals can become prey and larger fish can be bitten. Other puffers and cleanup crews are also at risk. Advice for spotted Congo puffers cannot be applied to potato puffers.

Assume other animals are at risk

Miurus is an ambush predator with a powerful bite. Small fish can be eaten, and larger tankmates can be injured. An apparently peaceful week does not establish long-term compatibility. Give one fish its own aquarium.

Other puffers are not a workaround

This species can be territorial toward its own kind. Do not house a pair or group based on advice for spotted Congo puffers. A larger aquarium gives a single miurus better space and water stability; it does not guarantee safe cohabitation.

Skip the cleanup crew

Shrimp, snails and other invertebrates may become food. Do not add snails as permanent cleaners or assume that an animal is compatible because it was not eaten immediately. If suitable cultured snails are offered occasionally as part of the menu, treat them as food rather than tankmates and remove uneaten remains. A pleco or catfish is still a fish at risk of bites, and it adds waste. Remove algae and leftovers through maintenance instead of relying on an animal to do it.

What can share the space?

Aquarium plants, secure wood and smooth rocks provide structure without introducing a potential victim. Choose plants that tolerate the conditions and attach them where digging will not uproot them. The fish itself provides plenty to observe.

Common questions

Can snails live with a potato puffer?

Do not plan on snails as permanent tankmates or a cleanup crew; they may be eaten. Suitable cultured snails can be an occasional food option, but miurus does not require snails every day. Follow the feeding guide for a varied menu and remove uneaten remains.

Can shrimp clean a potato puffer tank?

Shrimp may be eaten. Do not depend on them as a cleanup crew; siphon waste and maintain the aquarium yourself.

Can two potato puffers live together?

Do not assume a pair is safe. Miurus can be territorial and injure its own kind. A single fish in a dedicated aquarium is the recommended plan here.

Will a bigger tank make tankmates safe?

It does not guarantee safety. Added space improves habitat and water stability but does not remove predation or biting risks.

Keep the species in focus

This guidance is for Tetraodon miurus. Care targets are starting points to use with observation and water testing. For symptoms or treatments, consult an aquatic veterinarian.
